Jupiter Ascending is a 2015 film written and directed by the Wachowskis, who are primarily known as the creators of The Matrix trilogy. Despite receiving a less-than-warm reception upon its theatrical release in February 2015, Jupiter Ascending has since gone on to accumulate a large, active and erudite fanbase.
One of the main criticisms of Jupiter Ascending is that it was over stuffed, bombarding viewers with names, events and imagery, and there is unquestionably truth to this accusation. Nonetheless, this is a virtue as well as a flaw – the film is a font of concepts, influences and themes, and lends itself to analysis from practically every conceivable angle.
This promise has been followed up by writers – mostly within the fandom, though some commentators have approached the film from outside the hardcore fanbase – who have explored the film on every level, considering its relationship to everything from Gnostic mythology to Regency-era romance novels.
The purpose of this blog is to group as many of these fascinating writings together as possible, categorising them and creating a convenient and accessible point of reference for anyone interested in reading more deeply about the film.
